Fritz, schweizerischer Physiker und Astronom, * Warna 14. 2. 1898, ✝ Pasadena (Calif.) 8. 2. 1974; ab 1927 Professor für theoretische Physik, ab 1942 für Astrophysik am California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, ab 1948 auch am Mount-Wilson-Observatorium und am Mount-Palomar-Observatorium tätig. Zwicky beschäftigte sich v. a. mit extragalaktischen Sternsystemen und Supernovae; er zeigte dabei, dass sich in einer Galaxie innerhalb von 1 000 Jahren nicht mehr als zwei oder drei Supernovae ereignen und dass die Verteilung der extragalaktischen Nebel im Sternbild Coma Berenices statistisch der von Gasmolekülen bei Temperaturgleichgewicht ähnelt. Zwicky sagte auch die Existenz von Neutronensternen voraus, entdeckte die kompakten Galaxien und leistete bedeutende Beiträge zur Flug- und Raketentechnik.
